Short answer
A home battery in Washington, DC that stops charging or fails to back up the house usually has a fault outside the cells: a tripped breaker, an offline gateway, a firmware error or a changed backup reserve setting. We check those first, in that order, and pursue a warranty replacement only when the unit itself has failed.
What the job is
What battery repair covers
A battery paired with solar is a stack of parts: the battery, an inverter (built in on some models), a gateway or switch that separates the house from the grid in an outage, current sensors on the main lines, and the app that ties it together. A failure in any one of them looks the same from the kitchen: the percentage freezes or the lights go out.
We test from the outside in. Breakers and disconnects first, then the gateway and its connection, then sensor placement and settings, then the battery and inverter fault history. That order finds most problems quickly and keeps any warranty claim clean.

What you might notice
Signs your battery needs a look
Charge stuck at one level
The app shows the same percentage for days while the panels are producing.
The house went dark in an outage
The grid dropped and the backed-up circuits did not stay on.
Gateway offline
The app shows the system disconnected, or the last update is hours old.
Fault lights or alarms
An amber or red status light on the unit, or a fault code in the app.
Heat, buzzing or clicking
Unusual warmth or repeated relay clicks near the unit. Keep clear and call.
Step by step
How a battery repair visit runs
Call and describe it
Tell us the brand, what the app shows and what happened. We answer any hour.
Remote clues first
If you can share the app or the fault codes, we review them before the visit.
Testing on site
Breakers, gateway, sensors and settings get checked in order, then the battery fault log.
The fix or the claim
We repair what failed, or document a failed unit for the manufacturer's warranty.
Controlled backup test
With your OK, we simulate an outage to prove the house stays powered.

Inside this job
Battery not charging
A battery that will not charge while the panels produce usually has a settings or sensing problem. A backup reserve set to 100 percent, a time-based mode that holds charge for the evening, or current sensors clipped to the wrong conductor can all leave the battery sitting idle. Less often, a breaker feeding the battery has tripped or the unit has logged a fault that needs a reset. We read the fault history before changing anything, so the cause is on record.

Backup that did not switch over
When the grid goes down, the gateway has to open the connection to Pepco and let the battery carry the backed-up circuits. If the house went dark instead, the switch may not have opened, the battery may have been nearly empty, or the loads on the backup side may have been more than it can start. Large motors such as a well pump or central air are common culprits. We test the switchover under control and adjust the loads or settings that caused it.

Gateway and app faults
Many dead battery calls turn out to be a gateway that lost its internet connection after a router change. The battery keeps working, but the app goes quiet and remote updates stop. Reconnecting the gateway, updating firmware and confirming the current sensors read correctly usually brings the system back without parts. Where the gateway hardware itself has failed, we document it for the manufacturer's warranty process.

What you can safely try before we arrive
| Task | Safe for an owner | Needs our crew |
|---|---|---|
| Check the app for a fault code | Yes, write it down or take a screenshot | Using the code to start the diagnosis |
| Restart the home Wi-Fi router | Yes, if the gateway dropped offline after a router change | A gateway that will not rejoin the network |
| Switch the battery off and on | Only if the maker's guide gives the steps | Anything inside the battery, gateway or panel |
| Open the battery cabinet | No | Always; stored energy stays live |
Washington conditions
DC basements and the batteries in them
Most batteries we work on in Washington sit in rowhouse basements and utility closets beside the main panel. About 35 percent of DC homes were built in 1939 or earlier, and their older panels often have little room left, so batteries get wired in with tight clearances, long sensor leads or a subpanel added later. When backup fails in one of these houses, the cause is often in that added wiring rather than in the battery.
The batteries we troubleshoot most often are Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery and FranklinWH units, along with batteries paired with SolarEdge and SMA inverters.
What moves the price
What decides the cost of a battery repair
- Where the fault isSettings and connection fixes take less time than replacing a gateway or a failed unit.
- Warranty statusFailed parts under the maker's warranty are claimed through the manufacturer; labor coverage varies by brand.
- AccessCramped basements and stacked equipment add time.
- Load changesIf circuits on the backup side have to be moved, that is extra electrical work.

Solar Battery Repair questions we hear in DC
Most faults are not dangerous; the system shuts down to protect itself. If you notice heat, swelling, smoke or a burning smell, keep everyone away from the unit and call 911 first, then us.
Not when the work follows the manufacturer's procedures. We document what we find so any warranty claim goes through cleanly.
Yes. We work on systems from other installers, including companies that have closed.
Starting a large compressor takes a surge that many single batteries cannot supply. We check what is on the backup side and adjust it so the essentials stay on.
It helps. Read access to the app and its fault history often points straight at the problem.
We answer around the clock and book the visit for the soonest time a technician can work on the system safely.
